Mojstrana to Kranjska Gora – Stage 2 of the Jure Robič Cycling Route (D-2)
The ride from Mojstrana to Kranjska Gora is the second stage of the Jure Robič Cycling Route (D-2), one of Slovenia’s finest long-distance cycling routes. Covering 13.5 kilometres with only 168 metres of elevation gain, this stage continues through the spectacular Upper Sava Valley on a smooth, traffic-free cycling path built along the former railway line. Surrounded by the peaks of the Julian Alps, the route combines beautiful mountain scenery, excellent cycling infrastructure, and a relaxing riding experience suitable for cyclists of all skill levels.
Following the Historic Railway Line
One of the defining features of this stage is the former railway corridor that now serves as a modern cycling route. Thanks to the original railway alignment, the gradients remain gentle while the wide asphalt surface provides comfortable riding for road bikes, gravel bikes, trekking bikes, fitness bikes, and e-bikes. The route is almost completely separated from motor traffic, making it one of the safest cycling experiences in northwestern Slovenia.
Historic Bridges and Alpine Landscapes
As the route heads towards Kranjska Gora, cyclists cross several attractive railway bridges that once formed part of the historic rail connection through the Upper Sava Valley. These bridges provide excellent viewpoints over the surrounding forests, rivers, and mountain scenery. Throughout the ride, the magnificent Julian Alps dominate the horizon, creating one of the most picturesque cycling environments in the country.
Arriving in Kranjska Gora
The stage finishes in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia’s best-known alpine resort and a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. The town offers numerous cafés, restaurants, accommodation options, and serves as an excellent base for exploring nearby attractions such as Planica, Zelenci Nature Reserve, and the Italian border. Cyclists should note that riding through the pedestrian zone in the historic town centre is prohibited, so the final section is completed by walking the bicycle.
Ideal for Leisure Cycling and Bikepacking
With its smooth asphalt, minimal climbing, and outstanding scenery, this stage is perfect for recreational cyclists, families, touring cyclists, bikepacking adventures, and realistic indoor cycling training. The peaceful surroundings and high-quality cycling infrastructure allow riders to fully enjoy the journey without dealing with heavy traffic or technically demanding terrain.
