Höflein an der Donau to Vienna Hbf – Cycling EuroVelo 6 into Vienna
The cycling route from Höflein an der Donau to Vienna Hbf is the final stage of our four-day journey from Passau to Vienna along the famous Danube Cycle Route and EuroVelo 6. Covering 29.47 km with only 142 metres of elevation gain, this is an easy cycling route and a fitting conclusion to a much longer adventure along the Danube through Austria.
Starting in Höflein an der Donau, the route continues east towards Vienna. After many kilometres of cycling through the Danube Valley, small Austrian towns and peaceful countryside, the surroundings gradually begin to change. The rural landscape gives way to increasingly urban areas as the route approaches Austria’s capital. This transition makes the ride particularly interesting: it is not simply another section of the Danube Cycle Route, but the point where a long-distance cycling journey finally reaches Vienna.
Cycling along the Danube towards Vienna
Most of the route is ridden on asphalt, making this section comfortable and accessible for a wide range of bicycles. With relatively little climbing over almost 30 kilometres, the ride is considerably more about enjoying the journey than overcoming difficult terrain. The elevation profile remains mostly flat, which is typical of many sections of the Danube Cycle Route.
For cyclists travelling longer distances along EuroVelo 6, this makes the final approach to Vienna a relatively relaxed stage. After several days on the bike, a mostly flat route with good surfaces is particularly welcome. It is also suitable as an individual ride for cyclists who want to experience part of the Danube cycling corridor without committing to a multi-day tour.
As Vienna gets closer, the character of the route changes noticeably. Quiet cycling sections and natural surroundings are gradually replaced by bridges, roads, railway infrastructure and the unmistakable signs of a major European city. Rather than ending the ride at the edge of Vienna, this route continues through the city to Vienna Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Hbf).
Finishing the Passau to Vienna cycling journey
Reaching Vienna Hbf marks more than just the end of this 29.47 km route. It is also the final destination of our complete Passau to Vienna cycling journey, following the Danube through Austria over four days.
Passau is one of the classic starting points for cycling holidays along the Danube, while Vienna is one of the route’s best-known destinations. The journey between the two cities combines long stretches of dedicated cycling infrastructure, riverside landscapes, historic towns and the constantly changing scenery of the Danube Valley.
This final section completes that journey by taking the ride all the way into the heart of Vienna. Finishing at the main railway station is also practical for touring cyclists. Vienna Hbf provides excellent transport connections for continuing a journey, returning home or starting another cycling adventure.
For Cycling Horizon, however, Vienna is not necessarily the end of EuroVelo 6. The international route continues east from Austria towards Slovakia and Hungary, eventually connecting Vienna with Bratislava and Budapest before continuing much farther across Europe.
