Nußdorf Vienna to Vienna Hbf – EuroVelo 6 Danube Cycle Route
The ride from Nußdorf Vienna to Vienna Hbf is the final section of this 4-day cycling journey from Passau to Vienna along EuroVelo 6 – the Danube Cycle Route. After hundreds of kilometres following the Danube through Austria, this 16.41 km cycling route leaves the quieter riverside environment behind and continues through Vienna to the city’s main railway station.
With 109 m of elevation gain, a predominantly asphalt surface and no major climbs, this is an easy cycling route. However, its character is very different from the rural sections of the Danube Cycle Route. Instead of small towns, vineyards and open river landscapes, the final kilometres introduce bridges, urban cycling infrastructure, busy streets and the architecture of the Austrian capital.
Cycling from Nußdorf into Vienna
The route starts in Nußdorf, in the northern part of Vienna. This is where the previous Cycling Horizon section from Höflein an der Donau finishes and where the journey begins its transition from the Danube corridor into the city.
Nußdorf is a natural gateway for cyclists approaching Vienna along the Danube. From here, the surroundings become increasingly urban as the route continues towards the centre. Vienna has an extensive cycling network, and much of the journey can be completed using dedicated cycle paths and cycling infrastructure.
For riders who have spent several days travelling along the Danube, this transition is immediately noticeable. The landscape changes, traffic increases and navigation becomes more important. At the same time, entering Vienna by bicycle provides a completely different perspective on the city compared with arriving by car or train.
An easy but distinctly urban cycling route
The Nußdorf to Vienna Hbf cycling route covers 16.41 km with 109 metres of elevation gain. According to the Cycling Horizon difficulty system, the route is classified as Easy.
The predominantly asphalt surface makes it suitable for a wide range of bicycles, including touring bikes, trekking bikes, gravel bikes and road bikes. There are no significant climbs, so the physical demands are relatively low compared with longer stages of the Passau–Vienna journey.
The main difference is the urban environment. Cyclists need to pay more attention to intersections, other road users and changes in cycling infrastructure than on the quieter Danube paths outside Vienna. For that reason, following a GPX track can be particularly useful on this section.
Completing the Passau to Vienna cycling journey
This ride has special significance within the Cycling Horizon Passau to Vienna series because it completes the entire 4-day journey.
The trip began in Passau and followed the Danube through Austria, passing through a changing landscape of riverside towns, agricultural areas and some of the best-known sections of the Danube Cycle Route. The final approach through Vienna brings that journey to a clear and practical endpoint.
Rather than ending the ride immediately after reaching the city boundary, this route continues all the way to Vienna Central Station – Wien Hauptbahnhof. This makes Vienna Hbf a useful destination for touring cyclists, particularly those planning to continue their journey by train or return home after completing the route.
EuroVelo 6 and the Danube Cycle Route
EuroVelo 6 is one of Europe’s major long-distance cycling routes, connecting the Atlantic coast with the Black Sea. The section along the Danube is among its most recognised parts, and the Passau to Vienna cycle route is especially popular with touring cyclists.
Most of the journey is characterised by relatively gentle terrain, established cycling infrastructure and frequent settlements along the route. This makes it accessible to cyclists who want to experience a multi-day European cycling tour without tackling major mountain passes.
The final ride into Vienna demonstrates another side of EuroVelo touring: long-distance routes do not exist only in rural landscapes. They also need to connect cyclists efficiently with major cities and transport hubs.
